Childcare Staffing Crisis

Update on Childcare Staffing Crisis

Since first publishing this post in March of last year, Upper Canada Child Care, has been fortunate to reach a level of stability in our staffing, however a childcare staffing crisis remains. We have been unable to expand our programs to meet the ever-growing demand and waitlists at many locations remain long. We continue to prioritize recruitment of childcare workers, including by participating in and hosting local job fairs.

Impact of CWELCC

The introduction of the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) System – also known as $10/day childcare – promised increased access to more affordable childcare, but there are currently not enough workers to meet the demand, let alone staff for the expansion of our programs.

Our business relies on people; without them, our centres cannot run.

There has historically been high turnover in our industry due to issues such as compensation. The following articles highlights this need.

Every Crisis is also an Opportunity

If you’re considering starting a career in early childhood education, there’s no better time to do so.

The Ontario government is currently offering significant grants to those pursuing ECE certification: Ontario ECE Grants – Home of the Early Childhood Educators Qualifications Upgrade and Leadership Certification Programs. which often cover the full tuition and course materials. Skilled Trades Ontario is another pathway to gaining certification in this essential field through the Child Development Practitioner apprenticeship.

At Upper Canada Child Care, we have opportunities for new grads and experienced workers, both certified and uncertified. To join our community of likeminded professionals, see Careers – Upper Canada Child Care

Our clients have rated UCCC 4.5/5 on our 2023-2024 Family Satisfaction Survey.

Our child care programs, summer camp, and forest school are child-centered and inquiry based.
